In loving memory of Julio Gomes, 94, who passed away on July 24th, 2022. He was the beloved husband of 66 years to the late Dorothy Gomes and the son of the late John and Domingas Gomes. He was the proud father of Dolores Vicente and her husband Duke, Julio George Gomes and his wife Maria, and Inez Rhein Moore. He is the brother to Benjamin Gomes and his wife Helen, Dolores Gomes and her husband John and Ida Gonsalves and her husband Nhai. Julio is predeceased in death by his daughter Laura “Linda” Gomes, son Edward Gomes and siblings Jose Gomes and Maria Joao Tavares. He was lovingly known as “Poppy,” to 8 grandchildren and 16 Great Grandchildren and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Julio was born on the Island of Brava, Cape Verde in the village of Baleia. He emigrated to America in 1946 where he settled in Canton, Ohio. For a short period of time, Julio worked for Republic Steel before moving on to work for the Canton Malleable Iron Company where he enjoyed a long and successful career. Julio was a devoted husband whose smile was contagious. He was a man of strong faith and he taught us the importance of family, hard work and doing what is right. Julio enjoyed playing cards and scratching lottery tickets.
Poppy, you are now at peace, but you will live on forever in our hearts. We love you so much. Rest in peace
